Current student of the web developer training course at Wild Code School Lisbon, Rodrigo tells us more about his career path and what motivated him to discover the tech field.
From TAP Air Portugal to Wild Code School, Rodrigo tells us about his web developer's professional reconversion
Hello Rodrigo! Can you introduce yourself in a few words? What was your background before joining Wild Code School Lisbon?
So, my name is Rodrigo Silva, I'm 34 years old, from Brazil. I´ve been living in Portugal since 2018, and since then I was working for TAP Air Portugal, the biggest airline in the country. My background is on marketing, editorial and sales. At TAP, I started to work with sales and after some time I was promoted to work in the back office. It was a really good experience and I had more contact with the travel systems. It was the first time that I worked with a black, only command program, that made me think… Oh, I can learn to code, maybe?
Why did you choose to follow our web developer training?
I decided to do a bootcamp after hearing about it from a friend who did it, and started my research about my options in Lisbon.
After seeing some videos, and reading some reviews, Wild Code School Lisbon was one of the best choices for me. I'm a person who is motivated by people, and one of my biggest concerns was that the classes could be boring. Big mistake. I woke up every day excited to see my colleagues, we are like a family now. We spend hours after class studying together or just chatting.
Where does your interest in the tech field come from?
I always had a passion for tech, and wanted to know more. I have many friends that are developers and they are so passionate about it. It looks like a cult or something. I started to get curious about the tech industry, and how it works, and of course we can no longer say that it's the future, actually tech is our daily life.
The sanitary crisis, the aeronautics sector and the tech field: what are the stakes?
You used to work at TAP Air Portugal. How do you think the health crisis has impacted the aeronautics sector?
This is the worst crisis in the history of aviation. Thousands of jobs were lost, big companies crashed around the world. It was a war scenario at the company, the challenge to survive is still there.
Do you think that tech is playing and will still play a major role in the design of the “transportation of the future”?
Definitely yes. The companies that don't adapt will not survive. Online sales are the biggest revenue on every airline nowadays, and the clients have so many options that the companies who offer a better online experience will always stand out. Fast, secure and user friendly systems define who sells more.
Rodrigo comes back to his experience at Wild Code School
To come back to you, how is your training at Wild Code School going? What are you working on at the moment?
Wow, the training is an everyday challenge. We recently had the second checkpoint, and I discovered that I know more than I thought.
I´m living one of the greatest experiences of my life. Never could imagine that I could learn so much in such a short time.
We are working with React and starting to learn more about Express and the backend area.
How do you see your career evolving afterwards?
The possibilities are so numerous... I feel like I can do anything, but after gaining some experience I intend to study and learn more about quantum computing. It's a field that can possibly change our life. I recommend everyone to google about it, and keep this topic in the radar.
Do you have any advice for people who want to start a new career in web development?
If you have the opportunity, just go for it!
It's not hard the way people think, when we are outside we tend to think that is a genius field, but it's not. You just need to be persistent, dedicated and work hard, no matter your age, or your grades at school, if you want to be a developer, you can! It is a real possibility!
Thanks for all your answers! Do you have any last words for the Wilders?
Wilders Community around the globe, I'm glad to be part of the fam! Never let the impostor syndrome take control, the future is ours! Wilder 4ever!
